Technically, they are probably correct. AA benefits should require crediting to AA. This can be overridden at the gate where the AA benefit applies and the flight credits to AS, but this would appear to be against the letter of the rules. Cool if it works, but little recourse if not. Probably very hard to get it done after-the-fact since they seem to be correct.

We've done something similar - used AS miles to upgrade and then credited to AA. If done at check-in it works just fine. In fact, one time we changed it over the phone a few weeks after applying the upgrade. At the time of the upgrade we were told that we needed to keep our AS numbers in there. So we did...for a while.
