As for JR Pass.... I think pay-as-you-go will suits you better.
I don't remember whether SUICA (kind like a Oyster card JP version) is compatible in Kansai area. (anyone knows about this?)
Either way, I think buying SUICA card is far more convenient thatn JR pass.
You can re-charge up to how much every you want on it.
