My company has found a cheaper direct flight with Air New Zealand so I think we'll be booking that. But if their times don't work our for some reason we might fall back to the flight+hotel option. Presumably there are no penalties if you don't turn up at the hotel at all?
Also try flight & car hire, this can often be cheaper than the hotel option
