Incident: Westjet B737 at Montego Bay on Mar 1st 2014, fumes in cockpit and cabin

By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Mar 5th 2014 23:20Z, last updated Wednesday, Mar 5th 2014 23:20Z

A Westjet Boeing 737-700, registration C-FWSX performing flight WS-2432 from Winnipeg,MB (Canada) to Montego Bay (Jamaica) with 102 people on board, was descending towards Montego Bay when the crew noticed strong fumes in cockpit and cabin. The crew worked the relevant checklists after which the fumes dissipated. The aircraft continued for a safe landing at Montego Bay.

The return flight WS-2433 was postponed to the next day, the incident aircraft reached Winnipeg with a delay of 22 hours.

The Canadian TSB reported (erroneously identifying the occurrence date as Mar 4th) that the crew did not declare emergency because being number one on the approach already. After working the checklists the fumes dissipated. After landing maintenance was unable to re-produce the problem. No further evidence of fumes was found, all systems operated normally, hydraulic and oil quantities were all found at serviceable levels.
