Sure it would be nice, but why should they have too? I would venture a guess there is an addition cost for AC to serve someone in J vs Y. Probably not much but still a cost.

Yeah the new upgrade system stinks, but unless you are paid J, I don't think AC or any airline is mandated to fill the J cabin.
