And this is how we know that, despite everything, Citi can't be doing too badly on this promotion. Rather than mailing these cards for a few cents, they spend 10-20x that much on first overnight delivery. Not just of the card, but of a letter telling you to expect the card (which sometimes comes after the card). And they do it for your second card, not just your first (ok, that's probably automatic, but still. If they were losing too much, that's not a bit of programming logic that would be too difficult to implement).
I'm still not in favor of cancelling before the AF hits (good way to screw up your relationship with Citi if they decide to care), but it doesn't seem like they're absolutely strapped for cash on this deal.
