I'm a big train person and want to go overland from Beijing to HK. The day I want to go the thru-train isn't running so my options are via Shenzen or Guangzhou. While Shenzen is obviously closer to HK I was curious if a night in Guanghou is worthwhile instead? Curious for some thoughts on this.

Personally, I would go straight to Shenzhen then Hong Kong and skip Guangzhou especially if you only have one night.
You won't be able to do it justice.
And if it is night life you want to enjoy, HK is so much better. If it is shopping, HK has everything you want.
Guangzhou is such a sprawling city, it takes time to get around to see things. Time that you don't seem to have.
