Just found out how to add the ach info to amex.

1) call and ask them to add it
2) keep a balance on your card for the next statement closing (might take 2 billing cycles)
3) the account will release and allow you to pay

This was confirmed with Amex. They even said the 16 digit account number shouldnt matter
