I have only been to Shenzhen, Shanghai and Wuxi. Today in Shanghai, my coworkers wanted to to compare Shenzhen and Shanghai. My response was that Shanghai was interesting because it had a rich history, and historic districts along with a diverse population including locals, people from the provinces of China and around the world.
My Chinese colleagues response was that there are three "Tier 1" Cities in China: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. They said that service was very good in Guangzhou because it felt it had to compete with Hong Kong. I as surprised by the high ranking of Guangzhou by the locals.
I also would second Moondog that the people of Shenzhen are amazing. Everyone I have met in Shenzhen has come from outside Shenzhen to pursue a dream. Reminds me of the California of my youth.
I have only met one person who was actually born in Shenzhen, and that person works with me in California.
