I would recommend Guangzhou not Shenzhen. Guangzhou is a city of both modern and history, quite a few history sites to go if interested. In addition, more than 10 train service depart from Guangzhou East Railway Station to Kowloon everyday, you can avoid the huge people stream in Shenzhen's ports of entry, which could take you more than 4 hours to go through if bad luck.
