All of the legacies have done this over the years; Delta is not alone in the practice.
Look at what Northwest did when Independence Air started service. IA started LAN-IAD service so Northwest started 5x daily LAN-DCA service. I think some of that "Protect Our Turf" filtered over to DL from NW with the merger. Or UA EWR-SFO/LAX when VX announced service.
