That's bad to hear, and I'm sorry there were some curmudgeons on your HAL cruise who made you and your children feel unwelcome. Our daughter started sailing HAL with us when she was 10 months old. She's now a 3-star Mariner, and we've never had anything but wonderful experiences in the Neptune Lounge. Most commonly, the older clientele coo over her and then tell stories about their own grandchildren (which sounds like it could get annoying but really doesn't).

So don't write off HAL--hopefully my family's experiences are more common than yours.
