Obviously, if there wasn't much in it between BA and VS, then this could tip the balance in favour of the airline whose online booking system is better. But if there was any substantial difference, I would have thought it natural to try to do it on the phone if online booking didn't work.
No. I'd never flown on either airline before. Obviously noone can fly direct from Australia to UK. I wanted to stop over in a SE Asian hub due to the timings of the flights. I really only looked at VS because they share part of their name with VA. I did enquire on the VS Facebook page at the time and they told me that that's the way they make their bookings.

I planned on travelling premium economy (which I did). I looked at VS, BA and CX. Those three airlines and QF are the only airlines offering premium economy from Australia to UK. Several times over a few weeks, the CX website quoted around AUD$14,000 for premium economy. VS wanted me to make individual bookings for each leg of the journey. BA won.
