Using HKID card to enter Hong Kong after visa expired

I was resident in HK for 6 months last year on a working visa. That visa has now expired, but I still have my HKID card (the green one with the chip) and this has no expiry date on it - only an issue date.

So, does anyone know if I can still use my HKID card to enter Hong Kong (for a holiday) using the e-gates, even though my resident visa has expired?

Obviously I can always enter using my British passport, but I'd rather use the e-gates if I can. Anyone have experience doing this?

Posting this on the BA forum as I'm sure there are quite a few HK-based expats on here.
