This year, with no soft landings etc., may not be "typical". But in the past, AA has granted "make up" 500 mile upgrades at the rate of one per 2,500 or more miles. Iirc, folks have called. Check here:

If they have typically offered this, do I need to call Aadvantage customer service or can I send in an email?
