Putting together what diburning and nainas28 said, Delta is legendary for predatory lowball fares where they want to drive out an upstart (east coast*), and for gouging when they "own" a route or airport (think Ohio, as an example). They've been the poster boy for these practices from time to time.
All of the legacies have done this over the years; Delta is not alone in the practice.
