If by private you mean small "corporate" jets, that ain't gonna happen. If you mean, repurposing aircraft to add an extra "section" or a larger aircraft here and there that is more than common. So too might chartering an equivalent-sized aircraft.
When Aloha Airlines went out of business, Hawaiian Airlines used 767s to shuttle stranded Aloha paxs and HA afternoon business travelers from Maui to Honolulu. They lost a lot of money on those flights, but served their community in a splendid fashion.
