As others have said, consider 'meal deals' etc.
And I wonder if you have encountered ex-EU fares yet? How about EU-LHR-JFK being less than LHR-JFK and EU-LHR, same flights, same airline bought separately.
There is nothing abnormal or wrong about this in any way.
And make no mistake, it won't be WHS responsible for all of this, the Telegraph will be picking up part of the bill I'm sure.
