Putting together what diburning and nainas28 said, Delta is legendary for predatory lowball fares where they want to drive out an upstart (east coast*), and for gouging when they "own" a route or airport (think Ohio, as an example). They've been the poster boy for these practices from time to time. The only thing that has worked against them historically has been a large competitor creating a fare war. Paging the new AA. Hopefully, JetBlue won't end up a casualty where Delta and AA go at it.
