Personally I've been able to pay for POUGs online and UUA over the phone with a different card from the original booking. They have asked for the card at the airport a couple of times though. Can't speak for cash upgrades over the phone.

I think once when I split a booking to UUA (only one award seat available - gave it to my OH), they asked to speak to her for "approval"
