I can see why EK are clamping down. Not only is the luggage space a problem, but so to the airplane weight. I understand that many EK flights take off right on the limit of what is allowed during the summer months. 300 Y pax with a weight assigned to them that includes 7KG of hand luggage is allowed for. But if say they all took 14KG, which seems reasonable, that is another 2100 KG that needs to be accounted for. Not to mention what J and F flyers carry in excess of the limit.
EK has one of the highest checked luggage limits in the industry. It's clearly not a weight saving measure as by being so tight on cabin luggage, people will be forced into checking a bag which just means they'll pack heavier.
