I had the opposite a couple of years ago on a late night LHR-MAN flight. The pilot announced 10 minutes. Just after this, we started to turn onto the approach. The cabin call bell went, and the CSD spoke to the cockpit. I heard her say 'we'll try our best'. She then announced 'Special crew announcement, 4 minutes to landing, expidite checks'.

They just about managed to complete, just as the wheels came down. It turned out the pilot had been offered a shortcut if he could make it.
