Missing connecting flight and Check in Bags question (help!)

Hi all,
I have a question/situation to see what the best action is to take.
I’m currently in Columbus for work and I have a return flight from Columbus -> LAX -> Seattle (Final Destination).
I want to only go to LAX (Forfeiting my flight from LAX to Seattle and I already purchased another one way ticket to do so on a later date).
My questions are:

1. How to best “Miss” the last flight on purpose?
2. How should I check my bag in? Can I only check to LAX or will it have to go to Seattle?
3. The best case scenario would be that my bag is checked to Seattle and flies there without me so I can just pick it up at the airport on my real flight back. However, I know that it’s a high possibility the airline will yank your luggage off the plane if you miss the flight. So what is the best way to check in my bag?

Thanks all!
