This is my first time traveling internationally, I assumed that we would go through immigration at our original airport (PIT and on the return home LHR), and then simply go through security, but I'm probably wrong.
For those of you familiar with JFK, we are transferring from Terminal 2 to 4, which on the map looks moderately close together.

The JFK T2-T4 connection is done via bus (The Jitney) and is fairly quick.

On your JFK-LHR flight they will give you a UK Border Agency (UKBA) Landing Card. This form is required for non-EU passport holders arriving in the UK. Be sure to have your passport and hotel (or wherever you're staying) details handy as you'll need to provide this information.
Also, occasionally, UKBA will ask to see proof of your return flight, so carry a copy of your itinerary.
