I once had two flights anywhere as a thankyou for something I did for my dad's business partner (nothing dosgy or sleazy! ) and took a friend with me to Denver skiing. She knew flights were free but I had hoped she would chip in more for accommodation or car but she didn't (v memorable holiday though incl. hypothermia in Grand Canyon).
Not trying to be critical, but if you offer something as a gift, there really shouldn't be an
expectation of reimbursal in other ways. I think others' hesitancy to accept a gift of the flight may be in part worry about incurring such an obligation.
