United sat down the 737's saying that there was no need for the 737 anymore and that the hubs were unprofitable with those fleets. As soon as the merger went through, they started to reopen 737 bases in the very same LUAL bases, Chicago, Denver, SFO, LAX, NYC all staffed with ONLY LCAL pilots since they were the only ones allowed to fly them. So the LCAL pilots were able to move into cities and domiciles they never could have held pre-merger or by seniority.
