My coworker said his return was processed by a person and the agent did the walk around and did not see any damage. At that point, there is no way for Hertz to prove the damage was caused by my coworker, so they eventually dropped the case but not without a lengthy back and forth.
Your story and my coworker's are why I always take pictures and note the pre-existing damage.
