Mainland-HNL-neighbor island should be no problem and I would book the minimum connection time.
The return is a different story. Since your reservations are gonna be on 2 separate PNRs, they might not "take care of you" if you're connecting to a different airline. If it's HA-HA then it shouldn't be a problem.
Fortunately, my mainland flights are also on HA, so both my connections are HA to HA. But they are on separate tickets, all using AA miles.
Like you, I'm assuming because my connection is HA to HA I should be fine (but still greatly inconvenienced) if my interisland flight is late and I miss my mainland connection. Fortunately, the odds of this are low because the interisland flights are generally pretty reliable.
If I were flying to the mainland on a different carrier and separate ticket, I think I'd leave more time (more than 2 hours) in HNL "just in case." But in this situation, I figure it would take some mighty grumpy and unhelpful HA agents to strand me in HNL if it was because their own interisland flight was late!
