I rung up AB customer service (who were quite helpful incidentally) and was told that missing the outbound does not cancel the inbound when I asked to cancel the outbound flight.

I then rung up again on a different day and got the same answer, again without directly posing the question.

So it seems AB books return short-haul flights as singles, which is a nice bonus!
