Oh my. This is completely the opposite of our experience. My husband has never received any upgrades or much recognition as HHonors Gold. He just made Diamond, so we'll see how that goes.
OTOH, we have had plenty of wonderful upgrades as Marriott Plat - huge suites or otherwise lovely upgrades (such as view rooms) in Sonoma, Scottsdale, San Diego, Washington DC, Newport Beach, San Francisco - I can't even remember them all. We just had a lousy experience at the Marriott Bakersfield, but I don't blame that on Marriott, I blame Bakersfield...
