It is a pain, but you can call in advance and request a suite upgrade and the hotel will often honor it for Gold & Platinum elites. I have done this on vacations and trips where I needed the extra space and am batting .750 after an advance request. Sometimes we have to be proactive to ensure our benefits are delivered.
