Indeed, as the likely result would have been sitting in 5D otherwise.

This happened to me once when I checked in at ORD and saw my boarding pass read 1A, Economy (V) - this was back in the day when V was the upgrade class. Knew right away - CRJ-700 had been swapped for a CRJ-200. The flight wasn't even oversold, so there was no VDB opportunity... If I recall correctly, I SDC'd off of it shortly thereafter - back in the day when SDC was actually possible.
