If you got a soft landing to Gold, meaning you didn't stay the 50 nights in 2013, I would definitely buy it back just in case you fail to hit 50 this year.
Or you could wait and pay less to buy Gold back next year (if you don't reach Gold again.)
I do believe I've stayed at the Shanghai JW 3 times (twice as a Plat and once as a Gold.) And all three times I was upgraded to a suite room. I do believe that 2 of the trips were only for 1 night and 1 trip was for 2 nights. So none of them were long stays. And all my stays were a few years ago.
But for me, I don't remember any real difference in treatment as a Gold versus a Plat.
