I was surprised how limited I was for options, I guess LYI is a pretty minor airport though. I need to try and have as much of the day as possible there and then be back into HKG that night, so I guess i'll start looking for another way! I was surprised by the lack of options through Shanghai...

can definitely make it. the problem is you don't really know in China if you will or won't given the frequency of flight delays.
if you want to assure you're into HK by a certain time, I actually recommend flying to Shenzhen from LYI. It isn't exactly enjoyable but it eliminates the connecting flight. Shenzhen has a new terminal which at least isn't as bad as it used to be. You can either arrange a driver to pick you up and drive you across the border to HK, or there is a bus service from Shenzhen airport to various spots in HK. I haven't taken the bus before but I know people who have and at least can vouch for the fact that it seems to work reliably. As to whether or not you'll enjoy that bus ride....I can't vouch for that
