Also instead of doing LAX-JFK-DCA-LIT with an overnight in JFK who not drop everything after LAX and just buy a one way to LIT from LAX- probably won't cost more than an overnight at JFK and will definitely be much less flying
Based on only 12 hours at LHR, as long as the outbound is all one itinerary (regardless of the fact that AA will price as two awards), it should not incur APD, as the system should see it as a transit.
