I have checked in hundreds of boxes. Imagine how your box is going to be handled - I would put a rope on it and tape it to the box except for the part of the rope you want the baggage handlers to use to lift. Without rope, you increase the likelihood of it being thrown around, etc.

Check-in will place the entire destination tag flat on the box.
