It's also a good opportunity to double-check the rate - I frequently find that the price has gone down and I will cancel and rebook to take advantage of the lower rate.
I completely agree on checking the rates. There is a lot of variability and prices have gone down as many times as they have increased so I have saved lots by doing this. Instead of paper printouts I download the confirmations to my tablet with directions if needed and names of the hotel in the native language and everything is in one place. There are countries that want to know where you are staying when you arrive, New Zealand for instance that can ask for a confirmation.
