You've answered your own question: you've never driven in France before and you might save $50 by renting in central Paris and driving 2.5 hours to Caen vs. taking the train?
Save yourself the aggravation and take the train.
You will not see that much "more" of France driving on the Peripherique and A14 and A13 to Caen.
