Just as in any other city anywhere else around the world, use normal, common sense, personal safety practices (dont exhibit signs of money, dont appear vulnerable, dont get high or drunk or be obnoxious, maintain situational awareness, dont visit known high crime or very poor areas) and you will be fine. Its definitely safer than visiting Detroit, Chicago or Southeast DC; safer than Compton, or the parts of Norfolk, VA even the Navy's SEALs dont visit.

No problems at all for your #s 1, 2, and 3. For #3 listen for reports about Popocatepetl - the volcano has been rumbling since 2012 although it unless it has an enormous eruption it wont affect Puebla or the highways - still, awesome to see plumes of steam and ash coming out of it.

Its been about two years since I was last in Veracruz and Tulum; when we go we drive from DF so I dont have any very recent experience but back then the highway routes were just fine. No noticeable police activity, no roadblocks/checkpoints, and my nervous traveler Mexican sisters-in-law were more concerned about whether Starbucks had opened any locations on the way to compete with Italiani's than they were with any security issues.

Of course, YMMV... go, have a wonderful time, because you will.

Thanks a lot, this is very useful. I would need your advice on another matter: what type of car should I rent? (I will be renting at MEX, CUN, and VSA.)

Here is my dilemma: I would like to rent something as inconspicuous as possible. Back in the days I would go with a VW Beetle and would blend in without attracting any attention. But now with four in our party and bags, my only two options would be a minivan and an SUV. I much prefer to drive an SUV, but I worry that it might attract undue attention from both thieves and authorities (especially the Suburban).

What do you think? Thanks again!
