I have had GREAT experiences at double-trees, and yes they vary very wildly--whenever I can I stay at one, they tend to be more old fashioned and nicely decorated, and its a nice change from the very standard hilton garden inn room..also, I found I get a really nice breakfast there as well.
I agree with the person who mentioned trip advisor, although I have yet to have a bad experience at a double tree...
