Maybe I've just been lucky but I've never had bad service when flying with NZ. I used to fly regularly in BP on their HKG-LHR-HKG service until they stopped it (grr) and since then I've only flown in PE for HKG-AKL-HKG. I have another AKL flight coming up in a few days so hopefully my RUs will get me BP for both legs. I'm also trying the TT for the first time as part of the same trip (I'm visiting MEL mid-trip) so that might be a shock to the system after only ever flying long haul with NZ.
One of the reasons I like NZ is the lengthy drawn-out dinner service! But I used to live in France so a long drawn-out dinner (or lunch) is quite normal to me. I find the food and wine excellent and it's one of the reasons I fly with NZ. I love the opportunity to try some different wines, especially NZ ones and the same with the food at dinner. The cheese plate accompanied by a glass of good red makes me a happy traveller.
When I fly with NZ, the food and wine on offer is an integral part of my trip as it's part of why I choose them (the other reason is the service). Just as when I fly with Emirates, I choose them for their great IFE and don't pay attention to the food as it's pretty meh even in Business. I just wish we could combine Emirates IFE and A380 Business (window) seat with NZ's service, food and wine although if that ever happened they'd probably never get me off the plane!
Each time I've flown with NZ the staff have been friendly, funny and very helpful. I got treated like a VIP last time I flew HKG-AKL even though I was only in PE. It wasn't a full flight and I was the only GE in PE but even so, the attention was overwhelming (not in a bad way). I was given a front row to myself and anything I wanted appeared instantly. I'm a very low maintenance traveller but I really wish I'd taken the attendant's name as she was quite amazing. My return flight was more "normal" but everything was fine.
Let's hope my lucky streak doesn't end in a few days on the HKG-AKL-MEL-AKL-HKG trip! Feeling a bit nervous now.....
