IME travel insurance companies will refund the amount of non-refundable air tickets only if they can verify that there is no residual credit on file to be used at a later date. Either a letter from the airline that your file has been cancelled and no outstanding credit remains is usually enough for the claims department to issue a refund for the amount of the nonref tickets.
