Thanks for everyone's reassuring replies. A colleague lent me his special case for posters - it's 9 inches in diameter and 40 inches tall. It's big, but will hold my 36" wide poster. I've been looking for a plain mailing tube, which might be smaller, but the post office now sells square boxes rather than the tubes. Any suggestions for where to find an alternative carry on?
Those poster tube are PITA and will count a third piece. Who printed it? I get my posters in a spiffy cardboard tube. Ask them for one. Otherwise go to a FedEx/UPS store.
BTW the suggestion of just folding it even if on poster paper works. I did that with my last poster. When I got to my destination I unfolded it and rolled it up. It was no worse for the wear. However, had been really important I would have ironed it out some (toss a pillow case over it first, iron the backside, and place something on the front incase the ink sticks).
