Maybe this was my problem. I got a United Club credit card which came with a free one year UC membership. United said I could show the credit card (since I didn't have the UC card yet), they could look up the number and see that I had a membership and let me in. She wouldn't budge off 'no'. ..
The credit card appraoch will only work at UCs (where you just need you MP account) , that will not work at *A lounges which for the Paid Membership approach require the physical membership card.

once you have the real UC card, things should work much better.
As advised earlier, if you go to a UC, you can get a temp UC card
that may work at the *A lounges
