Maybe this was my problem. I got a United Club credit card which came with a free one year UC membership. United said I could show the credit card (since I didn't have the UC card yet), they could look up the number and see that I had a membership and let me in. She wouldn't budge off 'no'.

I'll try again when the actual UC card comes.
