As a fairly new member of IHG I got curios what it is, so searched this forum and understood it is kind of penalty for not using all nights reserved.

But as I am having only one night, what is the point of an "early dep fee"? Have I missed something here or misunderstood?

1) EDF only kicks in once you check in and will only apply to Flex (not ADR) bookings as ADR nights are non-refundable

2) On a flex reservation, you usually ends up giving a 'held cc' deposit on checkin for the full stat amount ++ extra for incidentals. Hotel then charges to these held funds at checkout

3)So if you book 6 nights, but leave after two nights, hotel will bill you fo first 2nights you stayed ++ EDF ++ incidentals.

4)Sometimes the EDF is more than a 1night cost, so if checking out one day early, it is cheaper to just quietly leave, without informing front desk, and allow hotel to check you out next day 12noon in your absence.
