Amex doesn't have SM any longer, but you can chat instead of calling if you wish. Still not as "instantly to the point" as SM, but perhaps easier in some cases than calling voice (for example, you can do it while talking voice to someone else, or while someplace where you don't want to speak your card number out loud, or while blasting music over speakers at ear-shattering volume).

And if you SM to confirm, all you did was add a postage step you didn't need, since you could have just SM'd them to cancel in the first place (which is what this thread is all about). Same number of SMs (and same complexity) to confirm a cancellation done by mail as to just plain cancel by SM.
