Sounds like we have a similar family size. My trips this year include Maldives going Etihad in a mix of F and J and then going to Orlando at Thanksgiving to experience all the new rides opened and opening. So by your value metrics the Maldives trip is good, but the Orlando one is a "waste". Well if you ask my kids which one they prefer it'd be a pretty close call. Maybe you should ask yours too?
The Maldives trip is costing me 720k AA miles. You'd really need to be pretty stupid to value that at $72k, but if you do I am willing to sell you that all day long
I wouldn't buy at 9 cents due lower price options exist and I don't generate enough ROIC at 9 cents (though I would still turn a slight profit). Didn't mean to make you testy regarding Orlando (my father worked for Disney, I have a soft spot, though my kids have outgrown it). Maldives points sounds like an excellent use, but are you burning miles between RDU and MCO? That would seem excessive to me, but again if one has unlimited mileage currency I guess it is a wash. I've never found domestic mileage burns (air or hotel) to ever work well given the far superior economics of long haul premium travel.
Let us know if Maldives is worth it. Haven't considered, but remain willing.
