Your statement on "consitent level of quality" is where the disagreement comes in.

I am fairly new to staying at Hiltons. (I'm a LT Plat with Marriott and almost have my LT status with SPG as well.) But even with only limited experiences with Doubletrees, I've seen a very "wide" variety of quality.
