the concept of "protection" might seem out of line in this case, but what about montezume's example, a month off or let's say July 11th versus November 7th due to mistyping the date... should the consumer be penalized...
the main issue is that T&C that basically says we can cancel because the sun rose from the east or the fare was less than the cost of tea in china... those should be regulated...
I don't really want to turn this into a politics debate, but I fail to see how that should be regulated. You are more than welcome to start your own hotel franchise in this market, with the differentiated aspect being that "you don't cancel obvious mistake rates!", and test the idea that you save more from allowing the consumer to be happy and taking the enormous loss, vs other companies who don't take the loss and make the consumer a smidgen upset. No one's forcing you to book anything through marriott, so you really aren't entitled to this supposed "consumer protection". It's their business to run as they wish.
